CANTON, MICH. (October 14, 2010) – The Detroit Area Diaper Bank, a nonprofit charity providing diapers for people in need in Southeast Michigan, announced today that it has been awarded a $5,000.00 grant as part of the Art Van Million Dollar Charity Challenge. The Detroit Area Diaper Bank received the award at a reception held by Art Van Furniture to recognize the Diaper Bank’s important work in the community.
Art Van Furniture is supporting Michigan-based children, health and human services programs for the second year in a row by providing $1 million to fund 50 grants ranging from $5,000 to $50,000. Nearly 600 organizations applied to receive these grants.
In addition, the public will be able to decide which of the 50 charities will be awarded additional money by voting for them online at http://www.artvancharitychallenge.com. Members of the public can cast one vote for a charity each day through October 30th. The charity with the most votes on October 31st will receive an additional grand prize of $25,000.
In an effort to encourage philanthropic giving and community support, Art Van Furniture designed the grants as ‘challenge grants’ in order to encourage others to donate and maximize fundraising opportunities. The participating organizations are Michigan-based 501(c)3 non-profits who focus on children, health and human services programs.
“We are honored to be selected for this grant by Art Van Furniture, and our hope is that this grant will be matched by other donations from our local community,” said Marybeth Levine, Executive Director and Founder of the Detroit Area Diaper Bank. “In these challenging economic times, Art Van is a shining example of leadership and support for our community. Their financial support is just one part of their assistance to us; their friendship, recognition and encouragement is also a great help to all our volunteers and other donors. We are extremely grateful.”
“The Art Van Million Dollar Charity Challenge benefits 50 remarkable and deserving organizations to help them continue their outstanding work and improve the lives of people across our state,” said Art Van Elslander, Founder and Chairman of Art Van Furniture. “As I’ve said before, it’s easy to make a buck, it’s a lot harder to make a difference. I hope everyone joins us in helping make a difference for these 50 charities and for the state of Michigan.”
About The Detroit Area Diaper Bank
The Detroit Area Diaper Bank’s mission since its founding in April 2009 has been to raise awareness about the large hole in the “safety net” resulting in the unmet need for diapers in our community’s most vulnerable populations — babies from low-income households, the elderly and people with disabilities — and build a network to help meet it. No federal assistance programs pay for or provide diapers, not WIC, not Food Stamps or Medicare. Nonprofit organizations and state agencies working with families and individuals in crisis consistently list diapers as an ongoing and TOP need.
